Introduction

Department of Counseling Psychology
Goals
Our school wants to become a complete “Comprehensive University” and also wants to deal with many personal, family and social adjusting problems caused by rapid social change. Therefore, in the academic year of 2002 we renamed the “Graduate Institute of Child Welfare” to “Graduate Institute of Educational Psychology and Counseling,” led by Director and Professor Kun-Huei Liu. In the academic year of 2003, our school established the “Department of Counseling Psychology” as an undergraduate program. To integrate resource, the above mentioned graduate institute was renamed the“Graduate Institute of Counseling Psychology” and has been integrated with the undergraduate program in the same year. From this time on, our department will have undergraduate and graduate programs.
The main objective of this department is to “cultivate professionals in the field of counseling,” which not only can help solve mental disturbances and diseases to enhance mental health and living quality, but also to actively assist in developing the potential of the individual and group in order to accelerate the harmony and advancement of society as a whole. In concrete description, the educational goals of our department are:
1. To cultivate the knowedge and skill of psychotherapy;
2. To cultivate the skills that can be used towards academic research related to psychology and counseling;
3. To cultivate fundamental skills for the preparation of counseling psychology in various domains;
4. To offer further education for people in this profession and to elevate their knowledge and ability in counseling psychology.
 
Prospects
 
After the establishment of our department, we have worked towards perfecting the amount of qualified teachers, curriculum, teaching, research, and facilities. Our qualified teachers all hold doctoral degrees and have their own specialty. Our curriculum emphasizes on both theory and practice, implementing practical courses that are of great use to the work force. The unique and special courses include “Healing of Crisis and Trauma” and “Expressive Therapy.” Most of our graduates with a masters degree have passed the qualification exam for the professional counselor license, possess professional counseling skills, and are deemed in a favorable light from different fields. We will implement a doctoral program for a more developed profession in the future. The future options for graduates of our department are as follows: 
 
1. Advanced studies
The students who graduate from our department may continue their graduate studies in the areas of psychology, counseling, social work, and education. They may also set their goals on becoming a psychotherapist, or may want to be involved in academic research related to psychology and counseling. Currently, our department will enhance the guidance of students towards continuing advanced studies according to their interests.
2. Career
The graduates of our department use their fundamental counseling skills and apply them to different occupations in the work force if they choose not to continue their advance studies. Graduates from our institute with a masters degree have a total employment rate of 83 %. Most of them have passed the qualification exam for the professional counselor license, possess professional counseling skills, and are credited in many fields of the work force. Those who are not currently occupying a job are mostly focusing on preparing for the qualification exam for the professional counselor license. In the future, our department will help students on career planning according to their interests and aptitudes.
